The colonists were prepared! They had their own CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) plan in place, as they readied themselves for whatever wrath that King George III and his army had in store for them.
While we think of July 4,1776 as our day of Independence, there were many battles prior to that and after that, before we were truly an Independent Nation! As early as 1774 tensions were growing. Colonists began to mobilize for war while the British Army sent detachments to secure gunpowder and cannon in nearby towns. This is exactly why our Founding Fathers put in writing the Second Amendment of our Bill of Rights and they believed without a doubt that it “shall not be infringed!” They knew all too well about tyranny, and the vulnerabilities of an unarmed citizenry.
Paul Revere’s Ride
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
LISTEN, my children, and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.
It was the next day, after the Ride of Paul Revere and other patriots warning the American colonists that “the regulars are coming.” Paul Revere was not the only rider that night: four men and one woman made late night rides, alerting the early Americans of what dangers lay ahead. They were Paul Revere, Samuel Prescott, Israel Bissell, William Dawes, and Sybil Ludington.
It was on April 19, 1775, that the fighting erupted in the small Massachusetts towns of Lexington and Concord. The British planned yet another search and destroy mission, aimed at removing arms and supplies from the countryside. This time the target was the village of Concord, a hotbed of anti-British sentiment and a major supply cache. Anti-British intelligence in Boston quickly alerted Patriot leader Dr. Joseph Warren, who gave the fateful order to send the alarm, lighting the fuse that would start the Revolution.
Revere’s famous ride ended on the outskirts of Lincoln when he, Dawes, and Prescott ran into a British patrol. While Dawes and Prescott escaped, Revere was captured. Prescott managed to make it home to Concord, however, and alerted the town. When the British arrived, the men of Concord, Acton, Bedford, and Lincoln were waiting.
That battle ended on that day with an American victory. The British marched into Lexington and Concord intending to suppress the possibility of rebellion by seizing weapons from the colonists. Instead, their actions sparked the first battle of the Revolutionary War. The colonists’ intricate alarm system summoned local militia companies, enabling them to successfully counter the British threat.
Many Americans today believe there might be a great storm ahead for us here on our land. It would seem that those we have trusted to secure our Liberty have become intoxicated with power and seek to “overthrow” our Constitutional Republic. Perhaps in all truthfulness it has already been seized. I am, forever, an American who believes in We the People. I see people waking up and I see the enemies who walk and talk amongst us are beginning to swallow loudly and panic.
To restore our Republic in 2024 we will need to dig deep inside of us and find that patriot of long ago! Do you have a CERT plan in place where you live? Are you involved? If your area were to experience a crime wave, do you have a plan of action and or escape? Are you prepping and preparing your family or neighborhood for whatever mischief might be lurking around the corner?
“Men must be ready, they must pride themselves and be happy to sacrifice their private pleasures, passions and interests, nay, their private friendships and dearest connections, when they stand in competition with the rights of society.” John Quincy Adams April 16, 1776
In 1771 Samuel Adams published the following essay in the Boston Gazette:
The true patriot, therefore, will inquire into the causes of the fears and jealousies of his countrymen; and if he finds they are not groundless, he will be far from endeavoring to allay or stifle them:
On the contrary, constrained by the Amor Patriae and from public views, he will by all proper means in his power foment and cherish them: He will, as far as he is able, keep the attention of his fellow citizens awake to their grievances; and not suffer them to be at rest, till the causes of their just complaints are removed. – At such a time Philanthrop’s Patriot [a King’s man] may be “very cautious of charging the want of ability or integrity to those with whom any powers of the government are entrusted:” But the true patriot, will constantly be jealous of those very men: Knowing that power, especially in times of corruption, makes men wanton; that it intoxicates the mind; and unless those with whom it is entrusted, are carefully watched, such as the weakness or the perverseness of human nature, they will apt to domineer over the people, instead of governing them, according to the known laws of the state, to which alone they have submitted. If he finds, upon the best inquiry, the want of ability or integrity; that is, an ignorance of, or a disposition to depart from, the Constitution, which is the measure and rule of government & submission, he will point them out, and loudly proclaim them: He will stir up the people, incessantly to complain of such men, till they are either reformed or removed from that sacred trust, which it is dangerous for them any longer to hold.”
A true patriot will “Stir up the people?”
Is that not an interesting statement… especially in these times?
Are we ready to be true patriots? Do we have within us what it takes to be the “fathers” of a nation, which is in great need of “parenting?” by that I mean… America needs disciplined leadership… disciplined by the Constitution! OR we will surely fall to wanton men intoxicated by corruption and seeking complete power. “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (1887) Lord Acton
Excerpt from Paul Revere’s Ride
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
You know the rest. In the books you have read, How the British Regulars fired and fled,-- How the farmers gave them ball for ball, From behind each fence and farmyard-wall, Chasing the red-coats down the lane, Then crossing the fields to emerge again Under the trees at the turn of the road, And only pausing to fire and load.
So through the night rode Paul Revere;
And so through the night went his cry of alarm
To every Middlesex village and farm, —
A cry of defiance and not of fear,
A voice in the darkness, a knock at the door,
And a word that shall echo forevermore!
For, borne on the night-wind of the Past,
Through all our history, to the last,
In the hour of darkness and peril and need,
The people will waken and listen to hear
The hurrying hoof-beats of that steed,
And the midnight message of Paul Revere.
