THESE are always the times that try men’s souls…
Perhaps we do not think of ourselves or others as Thomas Paine’s “summer soldiers and sunshine patriots,” but we must admit to our own apathy regarding our governance. We’ve allowed those in power to gain power over us and now our Liberty has been chiseled away. James Madison stated, “The truth is that all men having power ought to be mistrusted.”
Americans have known for a long time that something is wrong in our nation. We brag of freedom but we live in government servitude!
Oh, that it was only just a Stamp Act!
In many ways, we ourselves are to blame. Little by little we have accepted government assistance here and there, subsidies, mandates, permits, restrictions, inspections, grants, licenses for this or for that, and in doing so, we have become a dependent people, no longer sovereign but owned and dependent on our own government. Government, of any kind, cannot give the citizens anything unless it first takes it away from the citizens. We the People, in our apathy, are no better than those worthless soldiers mentioned by Thomas Paine.
I believe it is not only beneficial that we look at our Declaration of Independence, it is our duty to educate ourselves and understand what their “grievances” were, then compare them to today.
I’m just a simple layman, reading, studying and pondering the words of our Founding Fathers. This is not some OLD document to be enshrined, it is a current reminder of our beginning as a nation and our responsibility to be active and mindful members (consent of the governed) of our current government, which by all rights and means belongs to We the People.
In my Substack articles this week, we will review the 27 Grievances of The Declaration of Independence. As we review each of these, ask yourself, “What would be your grievance list for today?”
As the Founding Fathers began their list of grievances they wrote:
Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.
To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
Grievance #1
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
Grievance #2
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
Grievance #3
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
Grievance #4
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
Grievance #5
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
In the grievances referring to laws: There remain many in leadership of certain cities and states who refuse to enforce the laws and protect their citizens. Immigration is the simplest example. On the federal level, Congress (the Legislative body) makes and passes all such laws. It is up to the President (Executive branch) to enforce these laws.
The Biden-Harris administration allowed millions of illegal immigrants to cross our borders and remain here totally and completely unvetted. For reasons unknown to most, the Biden-Harris administration intentionally allowed human trafficking, drug trafficking, gangs of a violent nature, sex trafficking and even foreign enemies to enter our nation. We have governors of certain states declaring sanctuary and we have mayors of certain cities doing the same. They are all breaking federal laws and defying the Constitution of the United States of America!
We have in many cities and states, prosecutors, judges and attorneys general not following the laws that are written. In many cases they implemented a “no-bail policy” even for the most violent criminals; rape, murder, robbery and assault are now of pandemic proportions, leaving citizens vulnerable and unsafe in their own homes.
Vagrant laws are not enforced, the homeless have taken over many areas of the cities. They defecate in public, they shoot up drugs in public, they block places of business and they are parked outside public school areas.
Grievance #6
He has refused for a long time, after such Dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the meantime exposed to all the Dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
The king removed the local government established by the colonists. The king’s dissolution of the government prevented the correction of economic problems and left the colonies open for invasion. Rule of law was not a priority of the king, for sure! This removed government structure and left the colonies in chaos.
We have cities in America today that are in utter chaos. Perhaps there is no king removing local laws, but many mayors and prosecutors refuse to enforce law and order, leaving Americans vulnerable. The number of homeless now living on the streets in American cities has risen exponentially. Homelessness encompasses many facets of people which also includes drug addicts and those who suffer from mental illnesses: they need help! For mayors, council members and prosecutors to ignore this problem, is destroying the cities, obstructing businesses and again, placing citizens in danger.
Dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
In taking over the colonists’ established local government, the king, as stated in the first part of this grievance, made sure that he was the only power and government that the colonists had. He was not going to give up his kingship over the colonies.
During the 2020 election the Democrat Party changed election laws and manipulated districts in order to keep power. The 2020 election was a total fiasco of corruption. We are now learning some of the truth regarding outside influences as well as shenanigans of the Democrat Party. In 2022 the Republican Party assisted the democrats by refusing to recognize the primary choices of citizens in certain states; denying the candidates financial support from the GOP and also denied them party endorsements. Those new candidates were left out cold to drown in the political waters. Honest elections have been denied to We the People.
Grievance #7
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstruction the Laws of Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of the Lands.
This is the opposite problem that we face today. As a new and growing land, the colonists welcomed and encouraged new people into their new land, but the king stopped the colonists from being able to attract new settlers to the colonies, closing down travel; not even family members were allowed. He was concerned about the growing power of the colonies and the popularity of republican ideals among immigrants. In fact, after the restrictions of the peace settlement of 1763, very few people settled west of the Alleghanies; immigration nearly ceased until the time of the revolution.
(What was the peace settlement of 1763? The Treaty of Paris of 1763 ended the French and Indian War/Seven Years' War between Great Britain and France, as well as their respective allies. The Biden-Harris administration ignored our federal immigration laws and intentionally overwhelmed the citizenry of this nation. The influx of illegal immigrants today has not only increased crime in our communities, but has also placed a burden on our economic system, education system, health system, employment, and on housing and property.
Removing our sovereign borders is denying the United States of America’s rights as a legitimate nation. It isn’t that We the People do not want to allow others to enter our nation, we do however, hold the right to vet such strangers and make sure America is being increased with good and honest people and families that actually want to be Americans. At this time, we have thousands of foreign enemies who illegally entered our nation and disappeared into the population; enemies from countries such as Afghanistan, China, Russia, Sudan, Iraq, and Iran to name a few.
Leaders of other nations agreed with the Biden-Harris administration to release into this nation some of their vilest and most ruthless people. They emptied their prisons and their institutions housing the criminally insane into our country. The Biden administration made sure these heinous criminals made their way into the interior of America.
Going back to the words of Grievance 6… causing, “dangers of invasions from without, and convulsions from within.”
The administration of President Donald J. Trump has taken on the task of finding these illegal alien criminals and deporting them back to where they came from. They are doing a fantastic job, but the Biden-Harris administration allowed millions of illegals to invade our nation. The current administration has also been dealing with unelected rogue federal judges attempting to obstruct any efforts of this administration to follow the federal immigration laws.

I find it extremely interesting that after nearly 250 years, We the People have once again become oppressed by a totalitarian government. This time it isn’t just one king, it is a legion, an oligarchy! In today’s modern-day America, the elected rely on the unelected: As far as I’m concerned, if we are to be ruled by a bureaucracy of the unelected, we are then under an authoritarian oligarchy, for which We the People have no control.
Restoring our Republic will not be easy, it will take much prayer, wisdom and action. We must learn from the past, then seek, and work, for a better future! For Our Posterity, we must Bring America Home©.
